Toshiba 57H82 HDTV

The 57H82 is a part of the TheaterWide series of units from Toshiba.  It is a high definition rear projection 3-CRT unit.  It supports an auto-covergence mechanism that is flawed on the unit that I own.  The manual convergence normally available in the main menu system is inadequate to getting the job done – it only supports converging the center, top, bottom, left, right, and the four corners.  It leaves out everything in between and does not allow for adjustment of the green alignment.

Fortunately, there is a much better convergence system available in Service Mode.

Service Mode

In order to enter Service Mode, you need the remote control and access to the front panel of the set:

  1. Press the MUTE button twice on the remote control so that the screen says “MUTE”.
  2. Hold down the MUTE button on the remote and leave it pointing at the screen.
  3. Press the MENU button on the front panel of the set.
  4. Release all buttons.

The letter “S” should now appear in the upper right corner of the screen.

To exit Service Mode, you must put the set into Standby and then power it back on.

Service Menu

With the service mode enabled (“S” on the screen), press MENU once more to actually enter into the Service Menu.  You will see a setting code and value appear in the upper left corner of the screen.

Advanced Convergence

Using the number keys on the keypad of the remote, press the number 7 to enter into convergence mode and bring up the grid.  Here’s the layout of the buttons and what they do:
